Community Relations

We Put Our Energy Here
Through its many subsidiaries, including Virginia Natural Gas, AGL Resources touches nearly 2.2 million residents in nine states.  We are proud to have been part of the fabric of our communities for more than 150 years. We believe that part of our corporate responsibility is to give back to our communities, and our philanthropic focus is designed to make a meaningful impact in the community we serve.

Areas of Focus

To make the most meaningful impact in our communities, Virginia Natural Gas focuses on these distinct areas of giving:

  • Energy Assistance: We support programs which primarily help low-income households and low-income senior citizens afford their natural gas energy consumption.  These programs include weatherization projects and emergency energy assistance.
  • Education: With an emphasis in literacy, math and science, this support includes public secondary schools (K-12); public and private colleges and universities.
  • Environmental Stewardship: We support projects such as clean air, conservation, and greenspace.
  • Community Enrichment: We support programs specific to minority leadership, women leadership, arts and culture, business leadership and/or economic development.

AGL Resources Private Foundation
We are proud to be a partner in the communities we serve. We strive to maintain a keen sensitivity to issues affecting our communities and our business. We show our dedication and corporate citizenship through our various foundation grants, community outreach programs, and other corporate charitable giving programs.  We realize that we cannot support every worthy cause in all our communities and make a meaningful impact.  Therefore, most grants approved by the foundation are for organizations that already have historical partnerships with the foundation and are within our service territories - Georgia, Florida, Virginia, New Jersey, Maryland, Tennessee, and Texas.  Unsolicited grant requests are welcomed, but most are rarely approved by the foundation.

V-Force: Employee Volunteers in Action

VNG Employees Rally for United Way
The United Way of South Hampton Roads recognized Virginia Natural Gas and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 50 for their meaningful contributions to the community.

VNG employees were honored with the United Way’s Community Impact Award for raising $89,000 and setting an example of vision and teamwork.

“Every year, Virginia Natural Gas employees demonstrate the generosity of spirit that is one of our core values at AGL Resources,” said Robert Duvall, vice president and general manager, Virginia and Maryland Operations. “Although we have fewer employees in 2006 than we did in 2005, we were able to surpass our total contributions. I think this says a lot about the generous spirit of our employees.”

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 50 was recognized as the United Way’s Labor Union of the Year. Danny Orie, a meter reader in VNG’s northern division and Doug Williams, a utility mechanic in VNG’s southern division, coordinated IBEW’s United Way campaign.

“Our IBEW bargaining unit employees have won this award three out of the past four years,” Robert said. “Under the leadership of people like Danny and Doug, their team generously gave their time and money into our community, raising over $14,719 to help improve the quality of life of Hampton Roads residents.”
