Virginia Natural Gas employees support Earth Day through education

May 1, 2008

Virginia Beach, Va. – May 1, 2008 – Virginia Natural Gas has joined with the city of Virginia Beach and the Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission to celebrate Earth Day. Employees of Virginia Natural Gas will assist city-wide volunteers in educating and encouraging environmental stewardship by citizens from all over Hampton Roads.  They will do so through exhibits, games, crafts, and other events at one of the nation’s first recycled landfills, Mount Trashmore Park. This annual event held on Sunday, May 4, is free and all residents from the Hampton Roads area are invited to learn about the environment and the joy of being “green” in a safe and fun-filled setting.

A grassroots effort to save the environment, Earth Day initiatives have blossomed into a world-wide endeavor. Earth Day activities in Virginia are held over a period of several weeks, with an emphasis on reducing our effect on the environment, a top priority for Virginia Natural Gas.

“Our employees work year round to provide safe and reliable service of natural gas, an environmentally friendly fuel.” said Jodi Gidley, president, Virginia Natural Gas. “Their enthusiastic involvement in Earth Day activities and grassroots efforts is a natural fit and an event we look forward to year after year.”

The efficiency and environmental friendliness of natural gas means that homes using it for heating, hot water and other appliances produce about 40 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions than homes using electric appliances for these services.  Natural gas is the cleanest burning and most efficient fossil fuel and will help us bridge to America’s energy future.
