Virginia Natural Gas employees celebrate Earth Day April 22, 2009
Norfolk, Va. – April 22, 2009 – Virginia Natural Gas employees are celebrating Earth Day with a variety of educational projects highlighting conservation and energy efficiency programs offered through the company’s new energySMART programs.
energySMART programs are designed to make it easy for customers to conserve by offering a variety of rebates and energy efficiency incentives, goals that align with Earth Day.
Virginia Natural Gas volunteers staffed energySMART educational booths at Williamsburg Earth Day, at Waller Mill Park, Earth Days Celebration at the Virginia Living Museum and today’s Newport News Earth Day event at City Center.
Prizes were offered for residents brave enough to spin the wheel in “How energySMART are you?” Winners walked away with environmentally friendly prizes at each booth including energySMART pens made from recycled wood, neoprene re-useable coffee sleeves and canvas grocery bags.
“As a natural gas company, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment.” said Robert Duvall, vice president, Virginia Natural Gas. “Our employees who participate in Earth Day initiatives reflect that commitment to our community.”
Employees will also participate in activities being held at Mount Trashmore Park on Sunday, May 3.
Earth Day was established to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment with the goal of a healthy, sustainable environment, including the promotion of clean energy.
“By using high efficiency natural gas appliances, Virginia Natural Gas customers reduce their impact on the environment,” said Duvall.
According to the Department of Energy, homes using natural gas appliances produce about 40 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions than homes using electric appliances for these services.
It is also a good time to remind customers to implement a home energy audit. An audit will show how much energy a home consumes. Discovering and correcting energy efficiency problems can save a home owner significant amounts of money over time and reduce their carbon footprint.
The Virginia Natural Gas energySMART program provides incentives for checking and replacing appliances to ensure their customers are operating at the highest efficiency possible.
